Spanish tourism down 97.7% in June 2020

As the focus of this website is the Canary Islands, it is easy to forget how vital tourism is to the whole of Spain.  On the 21st of June Spain reopened its borders to international tourists.  How did the Canary Islands and Spain do in the ten days in June the borders opened to some foreign tourists.

In June 2019  a total of 8,828,499 international tourists visited Spain.   The Canary Islands accounted for 931,810 or 10.5%  of the total visits to Spain.

In June 2020 just 204,926 international tourists visited Spain.  97.7% fewer v June 2019.   The Canary Islands accounted for 2,201, which was 1.7% of the total visits to Spain and down 99.8% v June 2019.

Catalonia 

June 2020 76,634 visitors. 96.4% fewer v June 2019.

Valencian Region

June 2020 31,487 visitors. 96.6% fewer v June 2019.

Balearic Islands

June 2020 28,382 visitors. 98.6% fewer v June 2019.

Madrid

June 2020 20,522 visitors. 97% fewer v June 2019.

Andalusia

June 2020 14,183 visitors. 98.9% fewer v June 2019.

Basque Country

June 2020 10,097 visitors. 94.2% fewer v June 2019.

Canary Islands

June 2020 2,201 visitors. 99.8% fewer v June 2019.

Murcia

June 2020 1,906 visitors. 98.2% fewer v June 2019.

The Canary Islands had a 10.5% share of Spanish tourism in June  2019 and 1.7% in June 2020.  Most airlines that fly to the islands did not resume services until July, and this would have affected the arrivals in June.

Germany 33,740 down 97.4%

Netherlands  12,321 down 96.9%

Italy 10,426 down 97.4%

Belgium 9,608 down 96.1%

UK 8,473 down 99.6%

The UK is usually the most significant visitor market to Spain.  In June 2019 2,057,933 British people arrived in Spain.  Over 20% of the total 421,451 went to the Canary Islands. 

In June 2020 8,473 British people visited Spain.  16% of the total British visitors to Spain in June 1,337 went to the Canary Islands.
